Annalyzing Alice Walker The Color Purple Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 1

Annalyzing Alice Walker The Color Purple - Essay Example She tells Him that she is only 14 and is already burdened with responsibilities of her siblings and the household, sexually abused by her father and pregnant twice. Innocent Celie is confused as to why these things are happening to her and asks God the reason, saying that she has â€Å"always been a good girl†. (Walker, 1) The letters written by Celie to God and later to Nettie, her sister, symbolizes her voice. Her initial letters to God were symbolic to her emotions that were very private, and therefore not for everyone’s eyes. It also shows her isolation as she has no one else to talk to. The only love she has in her life is that of her sister Nettie. They both share an unusual bond of very deep love. The story takes a turn for worse when Celie is married off to a much older man, who is a widower with children and has no respect for Celie. He treats her like a slave and uses her like a sex object, while continuing his affair with Shug Avery. Shug was first introduced to Celie through a photograph which is symbolic to her belonging to a very different world, a place where beauty exists and not like Celie’s world which is devoid of beauty. Celie, after marriage has a life much the same as before marriage. Nettie, on the other hand, in order to escape her father leaves home and comes to stay with Celie but later she escapes this place as well in order to escape the advances of Mr.__ (Celie’s husband). The separation of the two sisters further adds to the misery of Celie. Carrie and Kate, sisters of Mr.__ had good relations with Celie. Kate was the one who had made Celie believe that she deserved â€Å"more than this†. (Walker, 21) The climax of this book is the growing affection between the protagonist and her husband’s love interest, Shug Avery. Their mutual affection and closeness (even sexual relationships) helps these two women to overcome their personal problems. Shug is the one who brings Celie to the joys of sexual communion and it is from

Cleburne v. Cleburne Living Center, Inc Assignment

Cleburne v. Cleburne Living Center, Inc - Assignment Example Jan Hannah had bought a building in July 1980 in the city of Cleburne’s 201 Featherston Street which she planned to lease to the CLC so that they could establish a group home for the mentally retarded. This home was to be operated by the staffs of CLC who were to supervise thirteen mentally disabled men and women. This building had a total of four bedrooms and two bathrooms with an additional bathroom to be added later on. The ground work was as set and worked out only the legal aspect remained. The city of Cleburne informed the CLC that for operation of such a home, a special permit was required in accordance with the city’s zoning regulations. This special permit was necessary for such institutions as hospitals, correctional centers as well as rehabilitation centers. The permit is renewable annually. CLC complied with the request by submitting a permit application for the special use permit for the group home which the city had classified as a home for the feebly minded. Later on the city denied the special use permit to CLC on a three to one vote during a public hearing on the matter. Following the denial of the special permit, the CLC sued the city of Cleburne in a Federal District Court arguing that the zoning ordinance was wrongfully applied against them and that the decision to deny them the permit was an act of discrimination against the mentally handicapped in the society and an outright violation of equal protection rights of CLC and the potential inhabitants of the group home. The court found that were it not for the mental incapacitation of the potential inhabitants of the group home, then the special permit would have been granted, the District court went on to validate the city’s ordinance and decision as constitutionally acceptable. This court also established that were not suspect or quasi-suspect class and it held that the rational test

Lord of the Rings - The Two Towers :: essays research papers

Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The second movie report I chose to do was The Lord of the Rings – The Two Towers. This movie is a sequel of the first and is the second of three. It continues the long and interesting story about two young men who set out to safe their country of Middle Earth. Everything relies in their hands and the Ring of Sauron must be destroyed. The second movie left off right where the first ended and it was even better than the first I thought.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Frodo and Sam find themselves lost in the rocky hills west of the river and know that Gollum, the creature wanting the Ring, is following them closely. They manage to capture the corrupt creature and keep him with them for a while. Since Frodo is carrying the Ring as Gollum once did, he pities and feels sorry for the ugly creature. Frodo agrees to let Gollum go and Gollum agrees to guide Frodo and Sam to the Black Gate, the entrance to Mordor. It is in these gates and up in the mountain where the Ring must be destroyed. Gollum swears by the Ring to obey its master which is Frodo and Frodo accepts the promise. Sam by the way is worried and remains suspicious. Frodo begins to call Gollum by his true name which is Smà ©agol. Smà ©agol seems very eager and willing to please Frodo.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Gollum leads them through hills and swamps that were all haunted and not safe for them, especially for Frodo who possesses the Ring. During some time, Sam overhears Gollum talking to himself saying how he was going to kill the Hobbits and take the Ring from Frodo. As the viewer, you begin to see two sides of Gollum. One side he wants to obey Frodo while the other side he wants the Ring for himself and that is where he is pure evil.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Once Sam and Frodo reach the Black Gate as Gollum promised to take them to, they begin to realize that it is hopeless to go through the gate and continue their quest. There is no way to approach unseen and it is too dangerous for Frodo with Orcs and Sauron being so close. Gollum begs them not to enter and reveals that there is a better way to get into Mordor safely. Even though it is difficult and dangerous, it is much safer keeping away from the enemy.

2009 DBQ AP World

For years after the Berlin Conference, various European powers raced to occupy and colonize land in Africa. It was a time of growth for Europe, but what was it for Africa? Africa’s fate was being decided for it by the European invaders. Not all AFricans just stood by and watcher, however. There was a wide range of actions and reactions to the Scramble for Africa from the Africans themselves, from giving in peacefully to attempting to fighting back with all of their might. Many Africans were afraid of European power, so they just gave in to the Scramble without a fight. In 1886, the British government commissioned the Royal Niger Company to administer and develop the Niger River delta. Many African rulers just signed their land away [doc. 1]. This document is official and provides no personal repost, so it is possible that the rulers did not give in entirely peacefully, all we know is that they gave in. A personal record of the Niger River delta dealing would help immensely to t ell how easily the rulers signed.Ashanti leader Prempeh turned down a British offer of protectorate status, but he said that the Ashanti would always remain friendly with all white men [doc. 2]. Ndansi Kumalo, an African veteran of the Ndebele Rebellion tells how at first his people surrendered to the British and tried to continue living their lives as they always had [doc. 4]. Samuel Maharero, a Herero leader, wrote to another African leader about how the Herero people were trying to be obedient and patient with the Germans [doc. 7].Many people in Africa just gave i to the changes occurring all around them. Not everywhere the Europeans went did they encounter this obedience and complacency. Many places people fought the invaders. The emperor of Ethiopia, Menelik II, wrote a letter to Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Russia in 1891 telling them he would not just sit by and watch if they continues parcelling off Africa [doc. 3]. Ndansi Kumalo tells how, after trying to live normally, his people could not stand the Europeans any more and they took up arms against the Europeans and rebelled [doc. ]. An Ethiopian painting of the Battle of Adowa shows the Ethiopians greatly overpowering the Italians and clearly winning the battle while suffering a very few casualties [doc. 5].This is an Ethiopian painting so the artist probably depicted the battle to make the Ethiopians look as good as possible. A document from the Italians about this battle would make it easier to pass judgement on it. The Ashanti queen mother, Yaa Asantena spoke to the Ashanti chiefs in 1900 telling them that if they would not fight the Europeans the Ashanti women would [doc. 6].Samuel Maherero said in his letter to another African leader that they should fight the Germans as it is better to die fighting for freedom than to die from maltreatment, imprisonment, or something similar [doc. 7]. A German military officer said about the 1905 Maji Maji REbellion that the chiefs told their peop le that they had a medicine thst would make them invincible so they could fight the Europeans for as long as necessary [doc 8].An African chief, Mojimba, described a battle in 1899 on the Congo River, saying that the battle just kept going and going that many, many Africans were killer [doc. ]. He also said that white men are very wicked. As an African who fought the Europeans and saw them kill many of his kin, Mojimba naturally thinks that the Europeans are wicker. This account of the battle was also given 30 years after the battle so it might not be entirely accurate. A European account would help to see this battle more clearly. The Scramble for Africa was a difficult time for Africans, some Africans fought for a chance at their freedom and others accepted their fate and peacefully gave into the Europeans ways.

Managing Waste Products from Dairy Factories Free Essay Example, 7500 words

Waste from the dairy industry comes from the sources of milk, ingredients and the product itself. EMS application for wastewater management system includes setting up, monitoring factory model establishment, data collection implementation, methods for establishing losses, establishing standards, setting up data processing and reporting system (Mann, 2004, p. 35). Water processing plants that use chemical processes to manage the wastewater have now turned to the use of zero-effluent techniques of waste management that ensure that the waste water can be re-used and the volume of wastewater that is meant for disposal to the environment is minimized. (Labrecque and Bedard, 2004, p. 52) Treated water can be used for other purposes such as landscape irrigation, watering the plants, and industrial purposes. The world is in dire need of water reuse. (Shao, 2008, p. 1) The figure above shows data on the increase of the world s demand for water reuse; this has been increasing at a considerab le pace and will continue to increase in the next decade. Reusable water can help in environment preservation. Moreover, we will focus our study on the removal of nutrients from dairy wastewater and how these nutrients can be used for business, or how to make money out of it. Religion Is A Cultural System Of Behaviors, Practices, And...

Religion is a cultural system of behaviors, practices, world views, ethics, and social organization that relate humanity to an order of existence (Dictionary). With more than 84% of the world affiliating with religion, religion permeates the fabric of our existence by it’s influence on legal systems, nation’s policies, and moral standards (Religion stats). Making up 23% of the world population, the Muslim religion is divided into two sects: Sunni and Shi’a. The separation of the Muslim religion is the longest and largest division in the history of Islam (BBC). Furthermore, the split of religions is exemplified through the characters in The Kite Runner. Amir, the main character and narrator, describes religion as a part of every day life in†¦show more content†¦A Caliph is the chief Muslim civil and religious ruler, regarded as the successor of Muhammad (Dictionary). Abu Bakr was accepted as the Caliph by much of the community, which saw the succession in political and not spiritual terms. Shi’as believed that the Prophet s son-in-law and cousin, Ali, should be Caliph. They understood that the Prophet had appointed him as the sole interpreter of his legacy, in both political and spiritual terms (Shuster). As time has progressed, Sunni and Shi’a have not only grown apart because of the leadership conflict, but they have separated theologically. The difference of religious rituals and each sect’s interpretation of Islamic law has ultimately not caused hostility between the two sects (BBC). Furthermore, following the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979, the Taliban was created. It emerged as a a resistance movement intended to eject the Soviet troops from Afghanistan. The Taliban consisted of Shi’a aggressors who stereotyped and attacked the Sunni Muslims. After the Taliban emerged in power, they created a new system of laws in Afghanistan. Talibans use violence and execution to enforce their beliefs. The system of enforcement further separated the Sunnis and Shi’as (‘Who are the Taliban?’). In today’s world, Sunnis continue to dominate Shi’as. Although both sects live in peace, Shi’a remains inferior, which leads to conflict. Because of the power and wealth imbalance, Shi’as make up the

Genetically Engineered Food Essays - 2328 Words

Genetically engineered goods are a huge controversy in the United States. There has been a lot of conflict between different groups about whether or not genetically engineered foods should be so widely sold or at least not labeled. There are many people on both sides of the argument that have given great insight as to what genetically engineered foods can do for/to people. Those that are in favor of genetically modified food say that it allows for farmers to have a less risky harvest and this can then lead to producing more food for a higher population. To some people, this sounds like a good benefit to genetically modified foods. Others, however, have found that these facts simply don’t help them in the long run. Large portions of†¦show more content†¦Mice that were fed Roundup Ready Soy had problems with their liver cells. They said that they found the mice had oddly-shaped nucleoli and an abnormal amount of nuclear pores. This was said to have changed their â€Å" gene expression† or â€Å"the process at which information from a gene is used in the synthesis of a functional gene product.† Scientists said that this could have increased the metabolism of the mice and it could have possibly been caused because of a toxin from the food that had built up in its system (65 Health Risks of GM Foods). Another case was one that was experimented on mice with, once again Roundup Ready Soy, showed another result occurring from the subjects ingesting genetically altered food. The experiment consisted of female mice being fed the altered soy before conception, during birth, and after birth. The mortality rate of the mice was around 55%, which was considerably higher than the mice not fed the genetically modified soy. They saw that the newborn mice from the altered soy mothers were considerably smaller than the regular soy mothers. The scientists also saw an increase in aggression from both the mothers and children that ate the altered soy. Finally, they also recognized the infertility of the offspring of the altered soy mice. They noticed that none of them had been able to mate with each other because they wereShow MoreRelatedGenetically Foods And Genetically Engineered Food1463 Words   |  6 PagesGenetic Engineered Crops and Animals This planet sustains various life forms and over time these organisms have evolved to better survive in the environments in which they live.
